1970 Topps #257 Dennis Higgins

About Dennis Higgins
Higgins appears with the Cleveland Indians on #257 in the second series of 1970 Topps. Working only in relief, he struck out 82 batters in 90 1/3 innings that season. A year earlier, with Washington, he had 71 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings. At the plate he collected 3 hits in 12 at-bats.
Dennis Dean Higgins was a right-handed relief pitcher from Jefferson City, Missouri, who signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1958 and spent eight full seasons in their farm system before reaching the majors in 1966. He led the Washington Senators in saves in both 1968 and 1969 and later led the Cleveland Indians in both games pitched and saves during his lone season there in 1970. In 1969 he set career highs with ten wins and sixteen saves for first-year Washington manager Ted Williams. A multiplayer trade in February 1968 sent him from Chicago to Washington, and another multiplayer deal in December 1969 sent him on to Cleveland. He closed out his career with brief stints in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1971 and 1972. Over seven big-league seasons he compiled a 22-23 record with a 3.42 ERA and 46 saves, almost all in relief.
