About Ron Fairly

In 1970, his first full season with Montreal, Fairly played 119 games, 118 of them at first base. He hit .288 with 15 home runs and 61 RBI, and his 10 stolen bases were a career high. His Expos card, #690, falls in the seventh series, the high-number run of the 1970 Topps set.

Ronald Ray Fairly grew up in Long Beach, California, and played center field for USC's 1958 College World Series champions. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a $75,000 bonus through scout Harold "Lefty" Phillips, choosing to stay near home despite a larger Chicago offer. Carl Furillo taught him how to play right field in National League parks; Fairly later wore Furillo's number 6 as a tribute. His 21 major league seasons included time with six clubs and All-Star selections for Montreal and Toronto. He finished with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, 1,044 RBI and a .266 average. After playing, he broadcast games for the Angels, Giants and Mariners. Fairly died on October 30, 2019.
