1970 Topps #691 Joe Grzenda

About Joe Grzenda
All three starts of Grzenda's major-league career came in 1970, and he struck out 38 batters that year, went hitless in 12 at-bats and recorded 6 of his 14 career saves. His #691 card, a seventh-series high number, lists the left-hander with the Washington Senators.
Joe Grzenda was a left-handed sidearm relief pitcher from Scranton, Pennsylvania, who spent eight major league seasons between 1961 and 1972 with the Tigers, Athletics, Mets, Twins, Senators and Cardinals. Standing 6-foot-2 and pitching almost exclusively out of the bullpen, he appeared in 219 games and finished 14-13 with a 4.00 ERA. His best year came in 1971 for Washington, when he went 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA. He pitched briefly for Minnesota in the 1969 ALCS. On September 30, 1971, pitching for the Washington Senators in their final home game before the move to Texas, he had recorded two outs in the ninth inning when fans stormed the RFK Stadium field, forcing a forfeit. Thirty-four years later he returned to RFK and handed President George W. Bush the ceremonial first-pitch ball when baseball returned to Washington. He died in 2019.
