The story on this card
Dukes made the Senators' Opening Day roster in 1970. In the April 6 home opener against Detroit he pitched two innings of relief, hit Dick McAuliffe with a pitch and gave up two runs in a Senators loss. He pitched in five games that month, with a 2.70 ERA over 6 2/3 innings. Washington optioned him to Denver on April 22. Topps numbered him #154 in its second series, a Rookie Stars card shared with Senators pitcher Jim Miles; it is Dukes's rookie card. Left-handed reliever who pitched in 16 major league games for the Washington Senators (1969-70) and Texas Rangers (1972). A Santa Clara pitcher who threw a no-hitter in his last college game, he entered the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame.
Miles pitched ten games for the 1969 Washington Senators: 20 1/3 innings, 15 strikeouts, a 6.20 ERA and an 0-1 record. Topps put him on #154, a Rookie Stars card with Jan Dukes in the second series of the 1970 set, both printed with the Senators. Right-handed pitcher from Grenada, Mississippi, and Delta State University who worked thirteen games for the Washington Senators across the 1968 and 1969 seasons, striking out 20 batters in his brief big-league career.
