1970 Topps #14 Hank Allen

About Hank Allen
Card #14, from the first series of the 1970 Topps set, shows Hank Allen with the Washington Senators. In 1970 he played 50 games for Washington and Milwaukee, hitting .222 with 8 RBI, and spent part of the year in the minor leagues. At the Winter Meetings on December 2, 1970, the Brewers sent him and minor-league infielder John Ryan to the Atlanta Braves for Bob Tillman.
Hank Allen, born Harold Andrew Allen in Wampum, Pennsylvania, in 1940, was a right-handed hitting outfielder who also filled in at third base, second base and first base, and even made one appearance as a catcher. He played seven major league seasons with the Washington Senators, Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox. He was the elder brother of Dick Allen and Ron Allen, and as of 2006 the three brothers ranked 11th on the all-time list of brother home run combinations with 358. Like both brothers, Hank signed first with the Philadelphia Phillies; after five seasons in their farm system his contract was sold to Washington in January 1965. He reached the majors in September 1966 and hit .387 with 12 hits in nine games. His most productive full season came in 1969, and in 1972 and 1973 he was Dick's teammate on the White Sox. He finished at .241 with 6 home runs, 57 RBI and 104 runs in 389 games. Afterward Allen trained and owned Thoroughbreds in Maryland, and in 1989 he became the first African-American trainer in seventy-eight years to saddle a Kentucky Derby starter. He later scouted for the Houston Astros and died in 2024.
