About Ted Williams

Washington's 86-76 finish in 1969 was the only winning season the expansion Senators had in the capital, and it earned Williams, in his first year in a dugout, the Manager of the Year award. Second-series #211 is his solo card in the 1970 manager subset and lists him with the Senators. Alvin Dark later called him a smart, fearless manager who got more out of his hitters.

Ted Williams spent his entire 19-year major league career with the Boston Red Sox (1939-1942, 1946-1960), playing primarily in left field. His career was interrupted twice by military service: three years in the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II, then portions of 1952 and 1953 as a Marine combat aviator in the Korean War. He finished with a .344 batting average, 521 home runs and 1,839 RBI. His .482 career on-base percentage is the highest of all time. In 1941 he batted .406, and no American or National League hitter has topped .400 since. Williams won the Triple Crown in 1942 and 1947, took American League MVP honors in 1946 and 1949, won six batting titles and was an All-Star in 17 seasons. His last two batting crowns came in 1957 and 1958, at ages 39 and 40. His only World Series came in 1946, a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The baseball writers elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966, his first year of eligibility. He later managed the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers from 1969 to 1972, and his work with the Jimmy Fund helped raise millions for cancer care and research.
