1970 Topps #336 Del Unser

About Del Unser
Del Unser was hurt in April 1970, and Ed Stroud became the Senators' primary center fielder. Ted Williams said he might play both men but was not taking Stroud out yet. Unser still appeared in 119 games, 103 of them in the outfield. He hit .258 with 5 home runs and 30 RBI. His 1970 Topps card is #336, from the third series, and pictures him with Washington.
Del Unser was a lefty-hitting outfielder who spent 15 seasons in the majors from 1968 to 1982, breaking in with the Washington Senators and finishing second in AL Rookie of the Year voting his first year. He later played for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Montreal Expos, moving among those clubs in a string of trades. Unser led the American League in triples in 1969 and finished his career with 1,799 games, 1,344 hits and 87 home runs. He played a part in the Phillies' 1980 World Series championship, driving in runs with pinch-hit doubles in Games 2 and 5 against the Kansas City Royals. Unser's father, Al Unser, played in the majors and also managed and scouted, and Del followed a similar path after his playing days, working for the Phillies as a coach, farm director and scout. His college play at Mississippi State earned him induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
