1970 Topps #281 Casey Cox

About Casey Cox
Cox's #281 is a third-series card showing him with the Washington Senators, issued after a 1969 in which he made 13 starts among his 52 appearances for an 86-win club that finished fourth in the American League East. He handled 32 chances in the field without an error, the best fielding percentage among AL pitchers, and threw a career-high four complete games. A July 7 win over Cleveland, his sixth of the year, had dropped his ERA to 1.88.
Joseph Casey Cox, a 6-foot-5 right-hander born in Long Beach, California, pitched for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers, and New York Yankees from 1966 to 1973. Signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1962, he worked through several organizations before reaching the majors with Washington in 1966, debuting that April and recording his first career strikeout against Al Kaline. Used mostly out of the bullpen, Cox set career highs as a rookie with 66 appearances and seven saves. His best season came in 1969, when he went 12-7 with a 2.78 earned run average as the Senators had their only winning record in eleven seasons in Washington. Manager Ted Williams called him one of the team's two best pitchers. Cox retired after the 1973 season. Over 308 career games he posted a 39-42 record, 20 saves, and a 3.70 ERA. He died in Clearwater, Florida, in 2023.
