1970 Topps #49 Tim Cullen

About Tim Cullen
Cullen's 1970 Topps card, #49, comes from the first series and shows him with the Washington Senators. In 1970 he came to bat 262 times with 56 hits and one home run. He drove in 18 runs, scored 22 and stole three bases. Six of his 123 games were at shortstop.
Tim Cullen was an infielder out of Santa Clara University, where he starred in both baseball and basketball before signing with the Boston Red Sox in 1964. Left unprotected, he was drafted by the Washington Senators and reached the majors in August 1966. When he joined the club, manager Gil Hodges asked if he had ever played second base; Cullen bluffed yes, and on September 4 he made his first appearance there. He wound up playing most of his career at second base, learning the position in the big leagues. He earned a spot on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team in 1967 as a shortstop, and on August 18 of that year hit a come-from-behind walk-off three-run homer against Kansas City. Traded to the Chicago White Sox and back to Washington for Ron Hansen within the same 1968 season, Cullen later signed with Oakland as a free agent in 1972, played for the Athletics team that won that year's World Series and retired after the season. Over seven seasons he batted .220 with 9 home runs and 134 RBI in 700 games.
