About Bob Garibaldi

The Giants traded Garibaldi to the Kansas City Royals organization on October 19, 1970, for catcher Fran Healy, and the Royals are the club on his sixth-series #701 in the 1971 Topps set. By mid-April 1971 he had been dealt again, to the San Diego Padres organization for pitcher Mike Jackson. He pitched that year and the next for the Padres' top farm team, the Hawaii Islanders, before retiring.

Bob Garibaldi was a right-handed pitcher from Stockton, California, who appeared for the San Francisco Giants in 1962, 1963, 1966 and 1969. At Santa Clara he was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1962 College World Series, setting records with 38 strikeouts and 27 2/3 innings, and he remains the only Santa Clara player to win that award. Casey Stengel left a game at Candlestick Park early to travel to Stockton and recruit him for the Mets, but Garibaldi signed with the Giants for a record $150,000 bonus and went from college straight to the majors that July. Under the bonus rule the Giants sent him down in 1963. He made 15 major-league appearances in all, finishing 0-2 with a 3.08 ERA and two saves. His only start came in 1969: five innings, one earned run, and a loss when three unearned runs scored behind him. Most of his career was spent at Triple-A Tacoma and Phoenix, where he went 85-69 and led the Pacific Coast League in complete games in 1969 and 1970. He later worked in beverage distribution and refereed college basketball for many years.
