1971 Topps #725 Gary Gentry

About Gary Gentry
Gentry went 12-11 with a 3.23 ERA in 1971, striking out 155. That winter the Angels asked for him in the Jim Fregosi deal and the Padres inquired as well; general manager Bob Scheffing turned both down, and the Mets sent Nolan Ryan to California instead. Pitching coach Rube Walker said at season's end that Gentry had "great ability." Topps gave him #725 in the sixth series of its 1971 set, with the Mets.
Gary Gentry was a right-handed pitcher born October 6, 1946, in Phoenix, Arizona. A second baseman at Camelback High School, he did not pitch until Phoenix Junior College, which he led to a national junior college championship before moving on to Arizona State. There he went 17-1 as a junior with 229 strikeouts in 174 innings. He threw a 14-inning, 15-strikeout College World Series semifinal against Stanford and scored the winning run himself, and he was named All-American and National College Player of the Year as Arizona State took the 1967 title. Houston, Baltimore and San Francisco all drafted him without signing him; the New York Mets landed him four days after that championship. Over seven seasons with the Mets and Braves he made 138 starts and went 46-49 with a 3.56 ERA. He struck out 615 batters, with 25 complete games and eight shutouts. Arm injuries ended his career in 1975, and he went home to Phoenix and into real estate.
