1971 Topps #411 George Spriggs

About George Spriggs
Kansas City sold Spriggs to the New York Mets on March 15, 1971, and his 1971 Topps #411, a fourth-series card, shows him with the Royals. In 1970 he hit .208 for Kansas City with 4 stolen bases, playing 36 games in the outfield. His final major league game came on October 1, 1970.
George Herman Spriggs was an outfielder who reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals across parts of five seasons between 1965 and 1970. Signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent before the 1963 season out of Wiley H. Bates High School in Annapolis, Maryland, he had already played for several Negro league clubs, most prominently the Detroit-New Orleans Stars in 1960. In the minors he led the International League with 34 stolen bases and hit .300 for the Columbus Jets in 1966, and he stole 170 bases in his seasons with that club. He spent most of his big-league time as a reserve outfielder, appearing in a career-high 51 games for Kansas City in 1970, the year he also won the American Association Most Valuable Player Award with the Omaha Royals. He finished his career with a .191 average, one home run and 9 stolen bases in 130 games.
