1971 Topps #715 Horace Clarke

About Horace Clarke
In 1970 Clarke played 158 games, 157 at second base, for a Yankees club that won 93 and finished 15 games behind Baltimore. He hit .251 with 172 hits and 23 steals, collected five hits in the nightcap of an April 19 doubleheader at Memorial Stadium, and broke up ninth-inning no-hit bids by Jim Rooker, Sonny Siebert and Joe Niekro between June 4 and July 2. His 1971 Topps card is #715, from the sixth print series.
Horace Clarke was a switch-hitting infielder from Frederiksted, St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the fifth player from the territory to reach the majors. He signed with the Yankees in 1958 and worked his way up through their farm system, crediting the Puerto Rican Winter League with sharpening his skills. Clarke debuted with New York in May 1965 and by 1967 had taken over as the regular second baseman, a job he held for seven straight years. A leadoff man and contact hitter, he played 1,272 major league games, more than any other Virgin Islands native. Clarke played through the Yankees' decline after 1964. Criticism from sportswriters and fans bothered him at the time, though manager Ralph Houk and columnist Phil Pepe spoke up for him. He finished his career with San Diego in 1974.
