About Dave Leonhard

Heading into 1970, Leonhard had a guaranteed place in the Baltimore bullpen for the first time in his career, and he posted a 5.08 ERA over 23 relief appearances and 28 1/3 innings. He walked 18 batters, gave up five home runs and threw a career-high four wild pitches. He explained that his job was to relieve when Dave McNally or Mike Cuellar was knocked out early, and that never happened. Card #716, a sixth-series issue, lists him with the Orioles.

Dave Leonhard was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire six-year major league career, 1967 through 1972, with the Baltimore Orioles during the club's late-1960s and early-1970s pennant-winning run. A Johns Hopkins University graduate who briefly taught high school history before signing with Baltimore, he worked his way up through the minor leagues, winning the International League Pitcher of the Year Award with Rochester in 1967 before his September call-up. He served the Orioles as both a starter and a reliever, posting his best season in 1969 with a 7-4 record and a 2.49 ERA over a career-high 37 appearances. He appeared in the 1969 and 1971 World Series and was on Baltimore's roster for its 1970 championship, though he did not pitch in that series. His career totals were 16-14 with a 3.15 ERA over 337 innings. He struck out 146 and saved five games. He and teammate Jim Palmer were roommates, and Palmer called him his best friend on the team. Leonhard and his wife Doris opened a garden center in Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1975.
