1971 Topps #677 Jack DiLauro

About Jack DiLauro
After a falling out with manager Harry Walker and general manager Spec Richardson, Houston sold DiLauro to Hawaii of the Pacific Coast League in 1971. The Braves organization bought him and sent him to Richmond, where he went 0-5 with a 6.16 ERA in 38 innings. The Braves released him, and he finished 4-2 with a 3.30 ERA for the Expos' Peninsula club. His #677 card, from the sixth series, is printed with the Astros.
Jack DiLauro was a left-handed reliever and spot starter from Akron, Ohio, who pitched 65 major-league games for the 1969 World Series champion New York Mets and the 1970 Houston Astros, going 2-7 with a 3.05 ERA. He signed with Detroit for a $15,000 bonus in 1963 and spent six years in the Tigers' system, reaching Triple-A Syracuse and Toledo, before the Mets acquired him for catcher Hector Valle in December 1968. He debuted on May 15, 1969, and made his first start on June 4 against the Dodgers, retiring 19 consecutive batters and leaving to a standing ovation in a scoreless game the Mets won in 15 innings. Houston drafted him from the Mets, and his last big-league game came on September 25, 1970. After a 1973 deal with Texas fell through, he more or less retired at 29. He worked for Koenig Sporting Goods, rose to district manager, and was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in 1974 and the Greater Akron Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
