1971 Topps #428 Jim McAndrew

About Jim McAndrew
McAndrew began 1970 as the Mets' third starter, ahead of Gary Gentry, and finished 10-14 with a 3.56 ERA. He had 9 complete games and 3 shutouts in 184 1/3 innings, and five of his losses came by one run. Card #428, from the fourth series of 1971 Topps, lists him with the Mets.
Jim McAndrew was a right-handed pitcher born January 11, 1944, in Lost Nation, Iowa, the oldest of four children on a farm where his father raised chickens and grew corn. He played baseball and basketball at the University of Iowa and earned a psychology degree. The Mets drafted him in the 11th round of the 1965 draft. McAndrew debuted on July 21, 1968, filling in for Nolan Ryan against Bob Gibson and the Cardinals. Despite a hard-luck start in which the Mets were shut out in his first four appearances, he finished 4-7 with a 2.28 ERA as a rookie. He pitched for the Mets from 1968 through 1973, in a rotation that included Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. He was a member of the 1969 World Series champions and the 1973 National League pennant winners, though he did not pitch in either Series. After the 1973 season the Mets traded him to the San Diego Padres, and he closed out his career there in 1974. He finished with a 37-53 record and a 3.65 ERA over 161 games.
