1971 Topps #444 Jimmie Price

About Jimmie Price
Jim Price caught 38 of the 52 games he appeared in for Detroit in 1970, hitting .182 with 5 home runs and 15 RBI. One of those homers was the only grand slam of his career, off Sonny Siebert on September 1 in Boston. His 1971 Topps card is #444, in the fourth series, and shows him with the Tigers. He played 29 games in 1971, his last season, and retired after the Tigers demoted him to Toledo rather than report.
Jimmie William Price, born October 13, 1941, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was a catcher who spent his entire five-year major league career with the Detroit Tigers from 1967 to 1971. A three-sport star at Hershey High School, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960 and worked his way through Pittsburgh's farm system, earning Carolina League Player of the Year honors at Kinston in 1963. After losing the battle for a roster spot in spring training 1967, Price was sold to Detroit, where he served as backup catcher to All-Star Bill Freehan for the rest of his career. He appeared in 261 games, batting .214 with 18 home runs, and was part of the Tigers' 1968 World Series championship team, with two pinch-hit at-bats in that Series. After retiring following the 1971 season, Price built a long career in Detroit sports broadcasting, working Tigers games on television and radio for nearly three decades, including as a longtime broadcast partner of Hall of Fame announcer Ernie Harwell.
