About Joe Keough

The Kansas City Athletics took Joe Keough in the second round of the first amateur draft in June 1965, one round behind Rick Monday and ahead of Sal Bando and Gene Tenace. His #451, a fourth-series card, lists him with the Royals. In 1971 he batted .248 and hit 3 home runs. His 34 runs scored and 14 doubles were career highs, and 100 of his games came in the outfield.

Joe Keough was a left-handed hitting outfielder who reached the majors with the Oakland Athletics in 1968, debuting with a home run off Lindy McDaniel in his first big-league at bat at Yankee Stadium. Selected by Kansas City in the 1968 expansion draft, he was on the Royals' Opening Day roster in 1969 and delivered the pinch-hit single that won the franchise's first-ever game. He worked into the everyday lineup in 1970, hitting .322 before a severely broken leg on June 28 ended that season. Keough returned in 1971 and set career highs with 110 games, 87 hits and 30 RBI. Traded to the Chicago White Sox after the 1972 season, he closed out his career with five games in 1973. He played in 332 games over six seasons split among Oakland, Kansas City and Chicago, appearing at all three outfield spots and first base. His career line was .246 with nine home runs and 81 RBI. He came from a baseball family: younger brother of Marty Keough and uncle of Matt Keough.
