1971 Topps #599 Norm Cash

About Norm Cash
Topps issued #599 in the fifth series, with Cash still a Tiger. His 1971 first half was strong enough that fans voted him to start the July 13 All-Star Game, played that year in Detroit before 53,559. He finished at .283 with 32 home runs and 91 RBI. Of his 135 games, 131 came at first base, and The Sporting News named him the American League first baseman on its All-Star team.
Norman Dalton Cash reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1958 and sat on their 1959 American League pennant winners. Chicago packaged him to Cleveland that December in the Minnie Minoso deal, and the following April, before Cash had played an inning for the Indians, Cleveland sent him on to Detroit for Steve Demeter, who appeared in four games for Cleveland. Cash held down first base for the Tigers for the next fifteen seasons. Ernie Harwell hung the nickname on him, borrowed from a Baltimore man known as Stormin' Norman, after a rare flare of temper. He was a four-time All-Star, the 1961 American League batting champion and a World Series winner in 1968, and he later openly admitted using corked bats, including during 1961. He was the only American Leaguer to hit 20 or more home runs in every season from 1961 through 1969, and he led the league in fielding twice and in assists three times. He finished with 377 home runs, fourth most by an American League left-handed hitter when he retired, behind Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig. Detroit released him in August 1974, and he drowned in 1986 after falling from a dock at Beaver Island, Michigan. Cash was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
