About Alan Gallagher In Action

Gallagher slid to .223 in 82 games in 1972. Manager Charlie Fox benched him early for Dave Kingman, then kept him behind the veteran Jim Hart. Fox said he "likes to do funny things. That's his business. But it's my ball club to manage." Topps gave him two sixth-series cards with the Giants, #693 and #694, the second in the In Action subset.

Al Gallagher was a third baseman who played for the San Francisco Giants from 1970 and, after a trade five games into 1973, for the California Angels. He was the first San Francisco native to play for the Giants after their move west. Raised in the Mission District, he starred at Mission High School and Santa Clara University, where a 25-game hit streak in 1965 earned him the nickname "Dirty Al" for wearing the same unwashed uniform throughout. The Giants took him in the first round of the 1965 June draft. He started on Opening Day 1970, batting second with Willie Mays third, and made the Topps All-Rookie team. The Angels got him for Bruce Miller and used him daily at third base, but a shoulder injury sapped his power. He finished with 442 games, a .263 average and 11 home runs, then managed in independent leagues for 24 years, wearing Mays's number 24. He died in Fresno in 2018.
