1972 Topps #215 Alex Johnson

About Alex Johnson
Johnson's move to Cleveland came after the Angels fired manager Lefty Phillips and general manager Dick Walsh and sent him to the Indians with Jerry Moses for Vada Pinson, Alan Foster and Frank Baker. He was hitting .328 on May 6, 1972, then went 6-for-66 and fell to .208 by June. He finished at .239 in 108 games. Topps #215, from the second series, lists him with the Indians.
Alex Johnson was a powerfully built outfielder from Detroit who signed with the Phillies in 1961 and broke into the majors in 1964. A right-handed hitter with a reputation for bat speed, he moved through the Phillies, Cardinals, Reds, Angels, Indians, Rangers, Yankees and Tigers over a thirteen-year career. The Sporting News named him its National League Comeback Player of the Year with Cincinnati in 1968, and he hit 17 home runs the following season. In 1970 with California he made the American League All-Star team and edged Carl Yastrzemski for the batting title. He clashed with managers and team officials over his effort, and his 1971 suspension in California led to a grievance that became one of the landmark cases of the players' union's early days. He finished his career with a .288 average over 1,322 games. After retiring he returned to Detroit and ran the family trucking business.
