1972 Topps #59 Fred Stanley

About Fred Stanley
Stanley's 1971 at Cleveland was his first long look in the majors: 60 games, 55 of them at shortstop, a .225 average and 2 home runs. The 1972 Topps Indians card #59, from the first series, is a recognised rookie card. During 1972 he moved from Cleveland to San Diego and finished the year at .196 across 45 games for the two clubs.
Fred Stanley was a shortstop who played 14 major league seasons, from 1969 to 1982, for the Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics. Born in Farnhamville, Iowa, he spent 1973 to 1980 with the Yankees, where he backed up Bucky Dent in the late 1970s and earned World Series rings in 1977 and 1978, both against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Phil Rizzuto, who did color analysis on Yankees broadcasts in those years, counted him a favorite. On September 8, 1973, Stanley hit the last grand slam at the original Yankee Stadium. He batted .216 with 10 home runs in 816 games, and he was the last active major leaguer who had played for the Pilots. In the Giants organization after his playing days, he managed in the minors from 2000 to 2004, won the 2001 Northwest League title with Salem-Keizer, and became San Francisco's director of player development in October 2007.
