1972 Topps #24 Ted Ford

About Ted Ford
On April 3, 1972, Cleveland traded Ford to Texas for Roy Foster and Tommy McCraw, on the recommendation of Ted Williams. After nine games at Denver he was called up, and in his April 28 Rangers debut he hit a seventh-inning home run off Bobby Bolin that drove in Tom Grieve and Frank Howard in a 9-6 win over Boston. He led the club with 14 home runs. His #24 card, from the first series, is issued with the Cleveland Indians.
Ted Ford was a right-handed outfielder with a strong throwing arm who played for the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers from 1970 to 1973. A Vineland, New Jersey, native, he was the Indians' first-round pick, 11th overall, in the January 1966 draft. Army service cost him 1968 and 1969, much of it spent as a cook at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He made his debut on April 7, 1970, going 0-for-2 with a walk against Baltimore's Dave McNally, and finished with 240 major league games, a .219 average and 17 home runs. In 1972 in Texas he led the American League with 10 assists from right field. After his major league time ended he played eight seasons in the Mexican League, through 1982, then coached young players in New Jersey and Texas, including at Huston-Tillotson University. He died in Austin on September 15, 2025.
