1972 Topps #193 Kurt Bevacqua

About Kurt Bevacqua
Bevacqua made his debut at Fenway Park after Cleveland acquired him from Cincinnati for Buddy Bradford, and hit .204 in 55 games in 1971, mostly at second base. In 1972 he hit .313 at Portland before a September return that produced a .114 average in 19 games. His #193 Indians card, from the second series, is a rookie card.
Kurt Bevacqua was a right-handed utility infielder and pinch hitter who played 15 seasons, 1971 to 1985, for Cleveland, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Texas and San Diego. Signed by Cincinnati in 1967, he reached the majors with Cleveland on June 22, 1971, and played every infield position and the outfield. He picked up the nickname Dirty Kurt in the Reds' spring training of 1970, when Pete Rose, looking at his filthy uniform after a day of B games and infield drills, called him that. In 1975 he won the Joe Garagiola Bazooka bubble gum blowing championship over Johnny Oates. In the 1984 World Series he served as the Padres' designated hitter and went 7-for-17 with two home runs, including a three-run homer in Game 2, the only World Series win in San Diego's history. He finished with a .236 average, 27 home runs and 275 RBI, and spent most of his later career with the Padres.
