About Bobby Murcer In Action

Murcer hit 33 home runs and led the American League with 102 runs and 314 total bases in 1972. He hit for the cycle on August 29. Topps grouped him with Tony Oliva and Merv Rettenmund on AL Batting Leaders #86. His regular Yankees card, #699, and In Action card, #700, appeared in the sixth series.

Bobby Murcer was a five-time All-Star outfielder who played for the Yankees, Giants and Cubs over 17 major league seasons. Yankees scout Tom Greenwade, who had also signed Mickey Mantle, signed Murcer in June 1964. He finished his playing career with a .277 average, 1,862 hits, 252 home runs and 1,043 RBI, and won a Gold Glove in 1972. After retiring in 1983, he joined the Yankees' television broadcast team. In 1987, he also coached the club's left-handed hitters before returning to broadcasting. Away from the microphone, Murcer became part-owner and president of the Oklahoma City 89ers and chaired the Baseball Assistance Team, which provided financial help to former players and other baseball personnel.
