1972 Topps #108 Gary Waslewski

About Gary Waslewski
Topps issued card #108 for Waslewski in the first series of its 1972 set, picturing him with the Yankees. New York released him on April 3, 1972, and Oakland signed him on May 15. He made 8 relief appearances for the Athletics, going 0-3 with a 2.04 ERA, and pitched his last major league game on September 28, 1972.
Gary Waslewski was a right-handed pitcher from Meriden, Connecticut, who attended Berlin High School and the University of Connecticut, signed with the Pirates organization and reached the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1967. Four months into his big-league career, with a 2-2 record and no complete games to his name, he was chosen to start Game Six of the 1967 World Series against St. Louis. He pitched for six major-league seasons, 1967 through 1972, working out of the Boston bullpen and rotation before trades sent him to the Cardinals, the Expos and the Yankees, and he ended his career with the Athletics. In 1968 he was one of 10 American League pitchers to share the lead with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. His career totals were an 11-26 record, a 3.44 ERA and 5 saves in 152 games. He also pitched winter ball in Venezuela, where he once went 16 innings in a 3-2 victory.
