1972 Topps #387 Horace Clarke

About Horace Clarke
Horace Clarke played 159 games in 1971, 156 of them at second base. He hit .250 with 156 hits and 17 stolen bases. Topps issued him as #387 in the third print series of the 1972 set, with the Yankees. In 1972 he again held second base, appearing in 147 games and batting .241 with 3 home runs.
Horace Clarke was a switch-hitting infielder from Frederiksted, St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the fifth player from the territory to reach the majors. He signed with the Yankees in 1958 and worked his way up through their farm system, crediting the Puerto Rican Winter League with sharpening his skills. Clarke debuted with New York in May 1965 and by 1967 had taken over as the regular second baseman, a job he held for seven straight years. A leadoff man and contact hitter, he played 1,272 major league games, more than any other Virgin Islands native. Clarke played through the Yankees' decline after 1964. Criticism from sportswriters and fans bothered him at the time, though manager Ralph Houk and columnist Phil Pepe spoke up for him. He finished his career with San Diego in 1974.
