1972 Topps #386 Jim Colborn

About Jim Colborn
Colborn's 1971 was brief: 14 relief appearances for the Cubs totaling 10 1/3 innings. He went 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA. On December 3, 1971, Chicago sent him with Brock Davis and Earl Stephenson to Milwaukee in exchange for Jose Cardenal. His 1972 Topps #386, a third-series card, shows him with the Brewers.
Jim Colborn was a right-handed starting pitcher who worked for the Cubs, Brewers, Royals and Mariners between 1969 and 1978, finishing 83-88 with a 3.80 ERA and 688 strikeouts in 1,597 1/3 innings. He graduated from Whittier College with a degree in sociology, then studied for a master's at the University of Edinburgh, where he starred in basketball and baseball and was named all-Scotland. The Cubs signed him as an amateur free agent in 1967. In Milwaukee he became the Brewers' first 20-game winner, going 20-12 in 1973, and made the American League All-Star team that year. Milwaukee then traded him with Darrell Porter to Kansas City, and in 1977 he won 18 games and pitched a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers. Seattle was his last stop. After he retired he coached pitchers under Jim Tracy with the Dodgers from 2000 to 2005 and the Pirates in 2006 and 2007, then became the Texas Rangers bullpen coach in 2008.
