1972 Topps #255 Jim Lonborg

About Jim Lonborg
Milwaukee pitching coach Wes Stock helped Lonborg rely more on control and changes of speed. He went 14-12 with a 2.83 ERA in 223 innings in 1972. Topps listed him with the Brewers on second-series #255. On October 31, Milwaukee sent him, Ken Brett, Ken Sanders and Earl Stephenson to Philadelphia for Don Money, John Vukovich and Bill Champion.
Jim Lonborg studied biology at Stanford and played summer baseball on teams sponsored by the Orioles before signing with Boston for $25,000 in 1963. His father taught agriculture, and Lonborg originally hoped to become a surgeon. Nicknamed Gentleman Jim for his quiet, friendly manner, he became the first Red Sox pitcher to win a Cy Young Award. In the 1967 World Series he threw a one-hit shutout in Game 2 and a three-hit complete game in Game 5 before losing the deciding game on two days of rest. His major league career lasted 15 seasons, continuing with Milwaukee and Philadelphia, and ended with 157 victories. After baseball, he graduated from Tufts dental school in 1983 and practiced in Hanover, Massachusetts. The Red Sox inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2002.
