1972 Topps #77 Ron Theobald

About Ron Theobald
Theobald spent late 1971 in Venezuela, taking Rod Carew's place on a winter-league team after Carew left. He signed on the condition that the club match Carew's $4,000-a-month pay. The 1972 season that followed brought a .220 average in a year the American League as a whole hit .239, with 113 games at second base. Topps carried his rookie card as #77 in the first series, with the Milwaukee Brewers, after a 1971 in which he hit .276 in 126 games.
Ron Theobald was a 5-foot-8, 165-pound second baseman who played 251 games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1971 and 1972 after six years in the minors. A second-team All-America at Arizona in 1963, he hit .366 and led the nation in runs batted in, runs scored and hits, and he made the All-Tournament team as the Wildcats finished second in the College World Series. The Cubs signed him in 1964 for $17,000, and the Twins took him in the first-year player draft. He spent three seasons with the Triple-A Denver Bears, where Billy Martin managed him for part of 1968 and he hit a career-best .293 in 1969. The Senators bought him from the Twins in March 1970, and on May 11 they sent him with Hank Allen to the Brewers for Wayne Comer. He made the club out of spring training in 1971, led the American League with 19 sacrifice bunts, a Brewers franchise record, and on June 8 homered off Mickey Lolich at Tiger Stadium, his first professional home run since 1967. Released in the spring of 1973, he finished with the Triple-A Hawaii Islanders, stayed in Honolulu and worked for United Parcel Service. Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker called him the Little General.
