Charlie Williams was a right-handed pitcher from Flushing, Queens, who worked eight seasons in the majors, one with the Mets and seven with the San Francisco Giants, and is best known as the player New York traded for Willie Mays. He went 23-22 with a 3.97 ERA in 268 games, 33 of them starts, and saved four. The Mets took him in the seventh round of the 1968 draft out of Parsons College, and he made their roster from spring training in 1971. After splitting 1973 between Triple-A Phoenix and San Francisco, he made the Giants for good in 1974 and pitched for them through the 1978 season. Once his career ended he drove a New York City taxi for a short time, then settled in Port Orange, Florida. He died on January 27, 2015, from complications of heart surgery.
