The story on this card
Closter returned to the majors in 1971 after a gap since his 1966 Senators debut, and he pitched 14 games for the Yankees with a 2-2 record and 5.08 ERA. His one start came September 4 against Detroit: five innings, five earned runs, two of them on home runs. He shares first-series #124, the Yankees Rookie Stars card, with Rusty Torres and Roger Hambright. Al Closter, a left-handed pitcher from Nebraska, spent four big-league seasons with the Senators, Yankees and Braves between 1966 and 1973, after representing the United States at the 1964 Olympics while at Iowa State.
Torres made the Yankees out of spring training and appeared on Opening Day as a pinch hitter, but he hit .211 in 175 at bats through July 22 and was then demoted to Syracuse. He was recalled on September 1 and finished at .211 in 199 at bats with 3 home runs. The Yankees Rookie Stars card, #124 in the first series, puts him alongside Alan Closter and Roger Hambright, and it is the rookie card for Torres and Hambright. Switch-hitting outfielder who played for the Yankees, Indians, Angels, White Sox and Royals from 1971 to 1980, hitting .212 with 35 home runs. He was at the ballpark for three forfeited games in the 1970s, including the Washington Senators' last home game in 1971.
Hambright was at Double-A Manchester in 1971 when Yankees reliever Gary Waslewski went on the disabled list with a knee injury. Called up, he debuted July 19 with a scoreless inning against the White Sox, and manager Ralph Houk used him regularly through the end of the season, often in high-leverage spots. He struck out 14 in 26 2/3 innings with a 4.39 ERA. He accounted for 2 of the Yankees' 12 saves that year. His 1972 Topps rookie card, Yankees Rookies #124, is shared with Alan Closter and Rusty Torres. Roger Hambright was a right-handed reliever who pitched 18 games for the 1971 New York Yankees, his only major league season. He later won 17 games for Ciudad Juarez in the Mexican League in 1976 and retired after the 1977 season.
