About Cesar Geronimo

Given semi-regular work in Cincinnati, and helped by batting instructor Ted Kluszewski, Geronimo hit .275 in 120 games for the Reds, playing mostly right field while Bobby Tolan held center. In the NLCS against Pittsburgh he had 20 at-bats and a home run, and Cincinnati lost the World Series to Oakland. His #719 is a sixth-series Reds card.

Cesar Geronimo was the defensive center fielder of the Cincinnati Reds' Big Red Machine, a left-handed hitter with a strong arm and wide range who won four straight Gold Gloves, 1974 through 1977. Born in El Seibo, Dominican Republic, he spent five years in a seminary before signing with the Yankees in 1967 as a pitcher-outfielder. Houston took him in the Rule 5 draft after the 1968 season, and he debuted on April 16, 1969. On November 29, 1971, the Astros sent him to Cincinnati with Joe Morgan, Jack Billingham, Denis Menke and Ed Armbrister. He started in center field on the Reds teams that won the 1975 and 1976 World Series; in Game 3 of the 1975 Series he singled to lead off the 10th, then scored the winning run. He was the 3,000th strikeout victim of both Bob Gibson (July 17, 1974) and Nolan Ryan (July 4, 1980), and joked that he was just in the right place at the right time. Cincinnati traded him to Kansas City in January 1981 for German Barranca, and he played his last game on August 28, 1983. Over 15 seasons he batted .258 with 51 home runs and 392 RBI. The Reds Hall of Fame inducted him in 2008.
