About Cesar Gutierrez

Cesar Gutierrez hit .189 in 38 games as a utility infielder for Detroit in 1971. The Tigers sold him to the Montreal Expos, the team shown on his 1972 Topps card, #743 in the sixth series. Assigned to the Expos' Triple-A Peninsula Whips, he played 12 games there before his release.

Cesar Dario Gutierrez, a right-handed hitting and throwing shortstop from Coro, Falcon, Venezuela, played four major league seasons for the San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers between 1967 and 1971. Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1960, he was released in 1962 and signed by the Giants before the 1963 season, debuting with San Francisco in 1967. Traded to Detroit during the 1969 season, he became the Tigers' everyday shortstop in 1970, posting career highs across the board including a .243 average, 22 RBI and 40 runs. On June 21, 1970, in the second game of a doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians, Gutierrez went seven-for-seven, becoming only the second major leaguer to collect seven hits in a game without making an out. He lost his starting job in 1971 after Detroit acquired Ed Brinkman and finished his major league career that year. In 223 career games he hit .235 with 128 hits and 26 RBI, without a home run. He later managed in the Mexican League and worked as a coach and scout.
