About Darrell Evans In Action
Evans was the Braves' regular third baseman in 1972, his first full season in the majors, and hit 19 home runs. He drew 90 walks, fifth in the National League, for a .384 on-base percentage. His former coach Eddie Mathews had become manager and had spent hours hitting him ground balls. Topps issued two Evans cards in 1972, #171 and an In Action card, #172, both with Atlanta.
Darrell Evans played 21 seasons in the majors, 1969 through 1989, as a third baseman and first baseman for the Braves, Giants and Tigers. A left-handed hitter who drew walks and hit for power, he finished with 414 home runs, 1,354 RBI and a .248 average, and Bill James called him the most underrated player in baseball history. He led the majors in walks twice, was a two-time All-Star, and won the 1984 World Series with Detroit. In 1985, at 38, he led the majors with 40 home runs, and he became the first player to hit 40 in both leagues. He was the Giants' captain after Willie McCovey retired in 1980. Evans managed and coached in the minor and independent leagues from 1990 to 2010. His nickname was Howdy, for a perceived resemblance to the television puppet Howdy Doody.
