1972 Topps #260 Ralph Garr

About Ralph Garr
Two cards cover 1972. League Leaders #85, from the first series, puts Garr with Joe Torre of St. Louis, who won the MVP award with a .363 average to Garr's .343, and Chicago's Glenn Beckert. His regular card #260 shows him with Atlanta. Garr led National League outfielders with 11 errors in 1971, and when Carty returned healthy in 1972 he lost the left-field job.
Ralph Garr was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent his best years with the Atlanta Braves and finished with the Chicago White Sox and California Angels. A speedy contact hitter who hit to all fields, he batted .306 over 13 seasons and hit .300 or better five times. He came out of Grambling, where he led the NAIA with a .585 average in 1967 as a second baseman, and Atlanta moved him to the outfield in the minors. In 1974 he won the National League batting title at .353, led the league in hits and triples, and made his only All-Star team. His glove drew criticism throughout his career. The Braves' public relations director gave him the Road Runner nickname in 1971, tying it to his speed and to a licensing deal with Warner Bros. In 1975 he became the first player to double his salary through arbitration. He has been inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame and the International League Hall of Fame.
