About Sonny Jackson

Jackson played 60 games for Atlanta in 1972, batting .238 with 30 hits in 126 at-bats. He scored 20 runs and drove in 8. Seventeen of those games came at shortstop and 10 in the outfield. His card that year, #318, came out in the third series and shows him with the Braves.

Roland Thomas Jackson, known as Sonny Jackson, was a left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing shortstop who spent twelve major league seasons with Houston and Atlanta between 1963 and 1974. Born July 9, 1944, in Washington, D.C., and listed at 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds, he debuted for the Houston Colt .45's on September 27, 1963 and got scattered at-bats over the next two seasons. Although he had appeared in parts of three earlier seasons, he qualified as a rookie in 1966, when he hit .292, led the National League with 160 singles and stole 49 bases to tie the major league rookie record Rollie Zeider set in 1910. Houston kept him at shortstop through 1967, and he spent the rest of his career with the Atlanta Braves. He was the Braves shortstop when Atlanta won the 1969 National League West, though the New York Mets swept the three-game NLCS. Over 936 games he hit .251 and stole 126 bases. He stayed in the game afterward as a minor league coach and manager in the Braves and San Francisco Giants organizations and as a coach with the Giants.
