1972 Topps #713 Gene Michael

About Gene Michael
A good start in 1971 brought Michael praise in May from New York Daily News writer Joe Trimble, who wrote that he was playing better shortstop than any other man in the American League. On May 23 against the Indians, Sam McDowell slid into him at second base, took him out, and a fight followed. Michael finished at .224 in 139 games, 136 of them at shortstop. His #713 and In Action #714 are sixth-series cards printed with the Yankees.
Eugene Richard Michael, nicknamed Stick for his slender build, was a switch-hitting shortstop from Kent, Ohio, who played ten big league seasons (1966-1975) with the Pirates, Dodgers, Yankees and Tigers. Signed by Pittsburgh out of Kent State, where he also starred in basketball, he reached the majors in 1966 and became the Yankees' regular shortstop in 1969, batting a career-high .272 that year. A quick, smooth defender, he finished with a .229 average, 15 home runs and 226 RBIs over 973 games, and pulled off the hidden-ball trick five times in his career. After retiring as a player he managed the Yankees in 1981 and 1982 and the Chicago Cubs in 1986 and 1987, and he later served as Yankees general manager, where he is credited with rebuilding the farm system that produced the club's late-1990s dynasty.
