1972 Topps #601 George Stone

About George Stone
In 1971 the 24-year-old Stone drew comparisons to Claude Osteen, and Hank Aaron picked him as a sure bet to join Osteen in the 20-win circle. He finished 6-8 with a 3.60 ERA, his first win coming nearly halfway through the season in a shutout of the Reds. A 1.34 ERA in July brought three more wins, including a five-hit shutout of the Dodgers. His 1972 Topps card is #601, from the fifth series, printed with the Braves.
George Stone was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. A Louisiana Tech product signed by the Braves in 1966, he reached Atlanta as a September call-up in 1967 and became a rookie regular in 1968, working his way into the starting rotation. In 1969 he went 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA and helped the Braves win the National League West before the club fell to the Mets in the NLCS. His success stemmed from two different change-ups and a slider taught to him by Braves general manager Paul Richards. Joining the Mets in 1973, he had his finest year, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage. Arm trouble limited him in 1974 and 1975, his final season. He finished with a 60-57 career record, a 3.89 ERA and 590 strikeouts.
