1972 Topps #619 Rich McKinney

About Rich McKinney
McKinney opened 1972 as the Yankees' regular third baseman, having suffered second-degree burns at a beach party in Puerto Rico that winter. He made four errors in an 11-7 loss at Fenway Park, tying a record, and was optioned to Syracuse in late May with a .216 average. There he hit .299 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs. He returned in September and went 2-for-10. Card #619, from the fifth series, carries the Yankees name.
Rich McKinney was a right-handed hitting infielder and outfielder who played parts of seven seasons between 1970 and 1977 for the White Sox, Yankees and Athletics. A catcher and shortstop at Ohio University, where he made first-team All-MAC in 1967 and 1968, he was the 14th overall pick of the 1968 draft by Chicago and received a $25,000 bonus. He debuted June 26, 1970, starting at third base, a position he had never played professionally. His 1971 season with Chicago was the best of his career. Chicago traded him to the Yankees for Stan Bahnsen that December. He later spent most of 1974 through 1976 at Triple-A Tucson before a last big-league season in 1977. He finished with a .225 average, 20 home runs and 100 RBIs.
