1972 Topps #248 Tom Bradley

About Tom Bradley
Chicago ran a three-man rotation of Wilbur Wood, Stan Bahnsen and Bradley in 1972, and Bradley started seven times on two days' rest. He went 15-14 with a 2.98 ERA over 260 innings. His 209 strikeouts ranked fifth in the American League, and his final start of the year was a complete-game 5-1 win over Texas on September 29. Card #248 sits in the second series of that year's Topps set.
Tom Bradley was a right-handed starting pitcher who had his best seasons with the Chicago White Sox in 1971 and 1972 and then pitched for the San Francisco Giants. The California Angels drafted him out of the University of Maryland in the seventh round in 1968. He reached the majors in September 1969, and the Angels sent him to Chicago on November 30, 1970. The White Sox gave him 39 starts in 1971 and 40 in 1972. In November 1972 he was traded to San Francisco for Ken Henderson and Steve Stone, and he pitched through 1975, finishing 55-61 with a 3.72 ERA. Teammates called him Omar after General Omar Bradley. A Latin major who pitched in glasses, he later coached Jacksonville University from 1979 to 1990, was head coach at Maryland from 1991 to 2000, and worked as a minor-league pitching coach.
