1973 Topps #586 Bill Sudakis

About Bill Sudakis
Pinch-hitting for Brent Strom at Wrigley Field on September 16, 1972, Sudakis singled off Burt Hooton in the fifth inning, took third on Tommie Agee's single and scored on Ken Boswell's sacrifice fly. His Mets card, #586, appeared in the fifth, high-number series of 1973 Topps.
William Paul Sudakis signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Joliet Township High School in Illinois in 1964. A switch-hitting infielder, he worked his way through the Dodgers system, hitting 23 home runs for Santa Barbara in 1966 and sharing Texas League MVP honors after a big 1968 season at Albuquerque. He debuted with Los Angeles as a September call-up in 1968 and took over as the starting third baseman. Primarily a third baseman, he also caught and played first base over an eight-season career with the Dodgers, Mets, Rangers, Yankees, Angels and Indians. He was part of a group of young Dodgers nicknamed "The Mod Squad" and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated with them in May 1969. He finished his major league career in 1975 and later played in the Kansas City Royals system before retiring. Sudakis died on September 15, 2021.
