About Rich McKinney

McKinney joined Oakland on December 1, 1972, as the player to be named later in the Matty Alou-for-Rob Gardner trade with the Yankees. He was used mostly as a pinch hitter for the A's in 1973, was sent to Tucson in late July, and returned in September, finishing at .246 in 48 games. Card #587 is in the high-number fifth series and shows him with the Athletics.

Rich McKinney was a right-handed hitting infielder and outfielder who played parts of seven seasons between 1970 and 1977 for the White Sox, Yankees and Athletics. A catcher and shortstop at Ohio University, where he made first-team All-MAC in 1967 and 1968, he was the 14th overall pick of the 1968 draft by Chicago and received a $25,000 bonus. He debuted June 26, 1970, starting at third base, a position he had never played professionally. His 1971 season with Chicago was the best of his career. Chicago traded him to the Yankees for Stan Bahnsen that December. He later spent most of 1974 through 1976 at Triple-A Tucson before a last big-league season in 1977. He finished with a .225 average, 20 home runs and 100 RBIs.
