About Dalton Jones

Hitless in his first seven games of 1972, Jones was traded by Detroit to Texas for pitcher Norm McRae. With the Rangers he played for manager Ted Williams, the boyhood hero who had helped scout and sign him for the Red Sox, and finished the year hitting .152 with 19 RBI in 79 games. His #512 card, from the fourth series, shows him with Texas. The Rangers released him on January 25, 1973, and he spent that season with the Peninsula Whips, Montreal's Triple-A club, batting .208 in 59 games.

Dalton Jones was a left-handed-hitting utility infielder who spent nine major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, from 1964 through 1972. A Mississippi native who starred at shortstop in Baton Rouge, he signed with Boston for a $60,000 bonus and worked his way up through the Red Sox system before debuting in 1964. He played second base, third base and first base for Boston across the rest of the decade and was also used as a pinch-hitter. His best season came in 1967, when he hit a career-high .289, led the American League in pinch hits, and started at third base for Boston in the World Series. Traded to Detroit before the 1970 season, he closed out his career there and with Texas in 1972. Over 907 games he batted .235 with 41 home runs and 237 RBI.
