About Dodgers Field Leaders (Walt Alston / Red Adams / Monty Basgall / Jim Gilliam / Tom Lasorda)
Alston continued as the Dodgers' manager after 1972, sharing the 1973 Field Leaders card #569 with Red Adams, Monty Basgall, Jim Gilliam and Tom Lasorda. It was a high number in the fifth series. In 1973, Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey began playing together in his infield. Los Angeles finished 95-66, second in the National League West. Walt Alston managed the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for 23 seasons on one-year contracts. His teams won seven National League pennants and four World Series, including Brooklyn's only championship.
Adams was the Dodgers' pitching coach when Tommy John arrived in 1972 convinced he would have to depend chiefly on breaking pitches to win games. He disagreed emphatically and pushed John toward the fastball, slower than most but full of movement. Adams is second of the five names on #569, the Dodgers' managers-and-coaches card, a high number from the fifth series, which was printed in smaller supply. Walt Alston, Monty Basgall, Jim Gilliam and Tom Lasorda share it. Red Adams pitched eight games for the 1946 Chicago Cubs, then scouted for the Dodgers from 1959 to 1968 and coached their pitchers from 1969 to 1980; Don Sutton said no person ever meant more to his career.
Basgall managed El Paso in the Double-A Texas League during 1972, and at the close of that season he and Tommy Lasorda were promoted to Walter Alston's big-league coaching staff. Topps listed him with Alston, Red Adams, Jim Gilliam and Tommy Lasorda on #569, a fifth-series high number. Second baseman who played 200 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates between 1948 and 1951, then spent 1973 through 1986 as the Dodgers' infield and bench coach under Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda, working with four National League pennant winners.
Gilliam, the Dodgers' first-base coach in 1972, was known to younger players as 'Devil,' a nickname from playing pool in Gifford, near Vero Beach. His 1973 Topps appearance came on the Dodgers' manager-and-coaches card, #569, in the fifth, high-number series. Jim Gilliam was the Dodgers' switch-hitting second baseman and 1953 National League Rookie of the Year, a patient number-two hitter behind Maury Wills who won four World Series in Brooklyn and Los Angeles and became one of baseball's first Black coaches.
Lasorda reached the Dodgers' major-league staff in 1973 as Walter Alston's third-base coach, promoted after his Albuquerque Dukes beat Eugene in the playoff for the 1972 Pacific Coast League pennant. He shares card #569 with Alston, Red Adams, Monty Basgall and Jim Gilliam. Left-handed pitcher turned Hall of Fame manager who ran the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1976 to 1996, winning four National League pennants and the 1981 and 1988 World Series. He later led the United States to Olympic gold at Sydney in 2000.
