1973 Topps #568 Ray Newman

About Ray Newman
Newman's Brewers card, #568, sits in the fifth series and is a high number. That season he went 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 11 games. He struck out 10 batters in 18 1/3 innings and saved one game. His final major league game came on May 24, 1973.
Ray Newman was a 6 ft 5 in left-handed reliever from Evansville, Indiana, who pitched in 45 major league games over three seasons, one with the Chicago Cubs in 1971 and two with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1972 and 1973. He finished 3-3 with a 2.97 ERA, four saves and 46 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings. He became known for riding a bicycle to Wrigley Field. A driver once struck him and he could not pitch that day, which did not amuse Cubs manager Leo Durocher, and Newman was traded by the next spring. Durocher later described his team that year as including a nut who rode a bicycle to the ballpark. The Brewers traded Newman to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Strahler at the Winter Meetings on December 6, 1973. Newman died on May 5, 2023.
