About Bob Fenwick

Fenwick joined St. Louis in November 1972, when Houston sent him and Ray Busse to the Cardinals for Skip Jutze and Milt Ramirez. He welcomed the move, saying he would no longer have to worry about facing Bob Gibson, and he later counted a locker between Joe Torre and Tim McCarver among his highlights. He played five games in 1973, with one hit in six at-bats, before a May assignment to Triple-A Tulsa. The #567 card is a fifth-series high number printed with the Cardinals.

Bob Fenwick was a utility infielder who played second base and shortstop for the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals in 1972 and 1973. Born in Naha, Okinawa, in 1946 to a Navy corpsman from Minnesota and a Hawaii-born mother from an Okinawan family, he was the first major-league position player born in Japan. He grew up in Minnesota, batted .409 as a senior at Anoka High School and .407 as a junior at the University of Minnesota under coach Dick Siebert. The San Francisco Giants took him with the 16th pick of the first round of the June 1967 secondary draft. At Triple-A Phoenix he hit .311 in 1970 and .332 in 1971. Houston claimed him in the Rule V draft that November. His major-league totals are 41 games, 56 at-bats and 10 hits. He finished in the Cubs and Padres systems, retiring after 52 games for Hawaii, San Diego's Triple-A club. Back in Minnesota, he served as a Cook County commissioner and, as of 2007, as president of the Association of Minnesota Counties.
