1973 Topps #241 Dwain Anderson

About Dwain Anderson
Anderson reached 1973 camp expecting to compete with Mike Tyson for the Cardinals' shortstop job and left it as a backup, used mostly as a pinch-hitter. St. Louis traded him to San Diego for Dave Campbell on June 7, and on July 8 his eighth-inning squeeze bunt scored Dave Roberts with the winning run against the Cubs. He hit .121 in 71 games across the two clubs. His second-series #241 card, printed with the Cardinals, carries the Topps All-Star Rookie cup.
Dwain Anderson was a right-handed utility infielder who played shortstop, second base and third base for the Athletics, Cardinals, Padres and Indians between 1971 and 1974, hitting .203 with one home run in 149 major-league games. He played shortstop at El Cerrito High School, a Bay Area program that also produced Pumpsie Green and Ernie Broglio, and signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1965 at 17. Seven seasons in the club's farm system produced 31 home runs and 250 RBI before his September 1971 call-up. He debuted on September 3 with two singles in a 2-1 loss to Minnesota and scored Oakland's only run. On September 18 his ninth-inning triple broke a 2-2 tie in a 4-2 win over Milwaukee. His final game was May 28, 1974, when he replaced Jack Brohamer at second base for Cleveland and singled off Jim Shellenback in an 8-0 win at Texas. The Indians traded him to the Mets that June for Brian Ostrosser, his fourth trade in little more than two years; he finished the season at Triple-A Tidewater and left organized baseball.
