Yankees scout Tom Greenwade, who had also signed Mickey Mantle, signed Murcer in June 1964. He finished his playing career with a .277 average, 1,862 hits, 252 home runs and 1,043 RBI, and won a Gold Glove in 1972. After retiring in 1983, he joined the Yankees' television broadcast team. In 1987, he also coached the club's left-handed hitters before returning to broadcasting. Away from the microphone, Murcer became part-owner and president of the Oklahoma City 89ers and chaired the Baseball Assistance Team, which provided financial help to former players and other baseball personnel.
