1973 Topps #265 Gene Michael

About Gene Michael
Michael agreed to a $40,000 contract for 1972, and the Yankees general manager told him, "If I ever overpaid anyone it would be you." He led the club in RBIs into May and joked that this was what was wrong with the team. He finished at .233 in 126 games, 121 of them at shortstop. Topps put him on #265 in 1973, a third-series card with the Yankees.
Eugene Richard Michael, nicknamed Stick for his slender build, was a switch-hitting shortstop from Kent, Ohio, who played ten big league seasons (1966-1975) with the Pirates, Dodgers, Yankees and Tigers. Signed by Pittsburgh out of Kent State, where he also starred in basketball, he reached the majors in 1966 and became the Yankees' regular shortstop in 1969, batting a career-high .272 that year. A quick, smooth defender, he finished with a .229 average, 15 home runs and 226 RBIs over 973 games, and pulled off the hidden-ball trick five times in his career. After retiring as a player he managed the Yankees in 1981 and 1982 and the Chicago Cubs in 1986 and 1987, and he later served as Yankees general manager, where he is credited with rebuilding the farm system that produced the club's late-1990s dynasty.
